Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
Vincent Massey School (one of two overflow receiver schools for Mount Royal School) has reached capacity and is unable to accommodate any newly registered students overflowed from Mount Royal School.
Queen Elizabeth High School, which serves Grades 7 to 12, will now serve as a third overflow school to accommodate ongoing enrolment growth in the Mount Royal School boundary for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year and beyond.
As indicated in the accommodation notice dated Nov. 4, 2022, students overflowed from Mount Royal attend either Vincent Massey School or A. E. Cross School depending on the location of their home address. Students assigned to Vincent Massey will be overflowed to Queen Elizabeth High School if they cannot be accommodated at either Mount Royal or Vincent Massey for Grades 7 to 9.
See map below.
Students overflowed from Mount Royal School to Queen Elizabeth High School for Grades 7 to 9 still retain their designation to Western Canada High School for Grades 10 to 12. Should they wish to remain at Queen Elizabeth High School for Grades 10 to 12, they may apply to do so through the school transfer process.
A lottery will be held for incoming Grade 7 students for the 2025-2026 school year.
Students who are unsuccessful in the lottery process will be designated to an overflow school and placed on a call-back list. Information about the CBE lottery process is available at Lottery Information for Parents. No lottery will take place for Grades 8 and 9. If any spaces become available for these grades, overflowed students would be recalled in order of priority according to the lottery process.
No changes for current Grade 7 to 9 students attending Mount Royal School
Current Grade 7 to 9 students who live in the Mount Royal Boundary and attend Mount Royal School will remain at the school, provided they do not move out of the designated attendance area.
How do I register for school next year?
Students currently in Grade 6 who will be entering Grade 7 at Mount Royal School for the 2025-2026 school year will automatically be included in the lottery.
New students in Grades 7 to 9 will still need to register at Mount Royal School.
Registrations must be received by Noon (12 p.m.) on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025, to be included in the lottery. Registrations received after the lottery date will be added to the appropriate priority level on the call-back list in the order received.
If unsuccessful in the lottery, students will automatically be registered at the overflow school.
For more information on how to register, please visit our website.
Why is this change happening?
Enrolment has continued to increase as more families move into the Mount Royal School boundary. Establishing a third overflow at Queen Elizabeth High School will help to balance enrolment between the four schools and keep students at schools that are as close to home as possible.
We are exploring other solutions to address the high enrolment at Mount Royal School and will provide another update when available.
How does a call-back list work?
If space becomes available in Mount Royal School throughout the school year, that space will be offered to students on the call-back list currently attending Vincent Massey, A. E. Cross, or Queen Elizabeth High School. The student’s overflow school will notify them if a space becomes available. Students remain on the call-back list while they attend the designated overflow school. Students will be removed from the call-back list if they move out of the Mount Royal School boundary or transfer from their designated overflow school.
Any new registrations received for the 2024-2025 school year will be added to the call-back list based on priority designation and the date and time of their registration. The lottery process will be followed for Grade 7 for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond.
For more details on how we determine priority, please visit our website.
How will students get to school?
Junior high school students are assigned to Calgary Transit as their mode of transportation. Routes can be accessed at www.calgarytransit.com through the “Plan a Trip” tool. While CBE works collaboratively with Calgary Transit, decisions on service levels are made by Calgary Transit based on available space and resources.
