Planning is about finding the route that supports you, your goals and interests.
Post-Secondary Admissions
Why apply early?
- You receive a student number allowing you to apply for residence.
- You have an increased focus on your post-secondary plans.
- You remove the pressure of meeting later deadlines.
When can you start applying?
- This can be different at every post-secondary.
- University of Lethbridge is Sep. 1
- University of Calgary is Oct. 1
- SAIT is Oct. 3
- Always check the post-secondary website for current information.
- When the admission cycle ends will be different for each post- secondary.
General Application Process
- For post-secondaries within Alberta: www.applyalberta.ca
- For post-secondaries within Ontario: www.ouac.om.ca
- You will need your Alberta Education Number which is found on all your report cards. It is not your CBE ID number.
- For other institutions, you may apply through their website.
- Other Great Resources:
- Career Cruising: Public Libraries – You need a library card. It’s free!
- “Time to Choose” book (It’s an Excellent Resource)
- Self-reporting grade 12 courses and grades can be the norm for some post-secondaries ….except the U of C for 2019- 2020 school year.
- All post-secondaries will request a final official transcript to be sent from Alberta Education to them before the deadline, which is usually Aug. 1
- Indicate faculty and program you wish to pursue. Many are competitive.
- Many institutions will allow you to select a first and second choice.
- You can submit applications to several institutions.
- Application fees can range between $75.00 and $300.00 per institution.
- You should receive some acknowledgement of receipt of your application. Read it carefully as it will tell you what to do next.
- Some post-secondaries require separate application for Entrance Scholarships. Some do not, as it is automatic.
- Don’t forget to submit an application for residence. Some post- secondaries guarantee residence for first year students, some do not.
- After receipt of conditional/early admission, you will register for classes in the spring. You may be required to pay a fee to hold your spot.
What Courses Do I Need for the Program I want to Take?
- Again, each Post-Secondary and faculty can be different. Always check websites and attend our post-secondary visits to get the most up-to-date information.
