Knights' Notes - Wednesday, September 13, 2023

Dates of Interest 
September 15th – all High School students have a mandatory Home Room – students will be given information sheets to complete related to their strengths, areas of growth, success tools, and goals.  This information will be used to inform the IPP process and to help support all students. 

September 18th - Parent Council AGM 7pm in the Learning Commons – All parents welcome, Administration will be doing a High School 101 presentation as a part of this meeting.  
September 21 - Meet the Teacher 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. 
September 22 – Non-Instructional Day – No classes for Students – Day is devoted to IPP meetings with students and families.  Teachers will be reaching out to book these meetings.  
September 29 – No Classes – September 30th National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (day in lieu) 

Business Office 

·         All outstanding textbooks from previous years must be returned to avoid delays in receiving new textbooks.  

·         Students will come down with their classes to sign out new textbooks during the first full week of classes. They must bring their Student ID card (they can use last year’s card if needed).  

·         Gr 8 – 12 students will be able to request a locker at the Business Office. Please note that there may be long lineups during the first week of school, so students may want to have an alternate plan to start. Students do not need to request a locker if they don’t want one.  

·         New Grade 7 students will be assigned a locker. This information will be shared by their teacher.  

·         Optional course fees will be assigned in October, but please watch for early athletics, field trips, clubs, etc.  

·         Student Parking is by registration only in the designated student parking lot. Please register at the Business Office to receive a parking pass (limited passes are available). Passes are free but insurance and registration information will be needed. Students without a parking pass or parking in guest/staff parking may be subject to ticketing and/or towing.  

·         There are no refunds at the Business Office for incidents with the Coca-Cola vending machines. If your student has an issue, they are directed to call the number on the vending machine.   

·         There is no cash exchange or bank machine at the Business Office. Please ensure your student has appropriate denominations for the vending machine, bus, cafeteria, etc.

Student Services 
Welcome QEHS students! Ms, Fiolka, Ms. Brock, Ms. Smith and Ms. Meville are here to support you. We will be taking appointments starting the week of September 18th. If it is urgent, please come down any time! 

  

Course changes: 

All course requests have been reviewed. If you feel we have missed your request, please come to Student Services. 

CBelearn update: 

For students who have requested online learning, please check your email daily to see if you have been enrolled. Courses upload on Thursdays. Please make sure to complete the one credit E-learn course if this is your first online course. 

High School Students: 

All high school students have been added to a D2L shell named Student Services 2023-2024.  Please check this shell frequently as it contains information about Graduation and Post Secondary information.

We have many post-secondary presentations coming up that high school students are encouraged to attend. Presentations will be held in the Learning Commons during Knight’s Block (9:00-9:30am), unless otherwise stated:

Loran Scholarship – The Loran Award supports promising young Canadians who show strength of character and a commitment to service in their communities, challenging them to fully realize their leadership potential. Deadline to apply for scholarship is October 6, 2023.

Languages Course Challenge: 

High school students who want to challenge a 30 or 35 level language course are asked to  pick up an application in Student Services or use the link below. Course challenges are offered twice a year. The first date is October 28th, 2023.

Youth Employment Centre – Youth Fall Hiring Event 

Youth must drop into The Youth Employment Centre before September 22nd to meet with an employment expert to complete a pre-screening for the event and have an interview scheduled. The Youth Employment Centre is located at 315 – 10th Avenue S.E. on the second floor. 

The hiring event is held on September 29th.

Job Shadow Day 

This free event for young women in Grade 11 and 12, is happening on October 25, 2023 8:30 a.m -3:30 p.m. at Bow Valley Square Tower 2.

Diploma Exam Re-writes 
Any Grade 12 student who wishes to re-write a diploma exam should meet with Mrs Mann no later than 1 pm Friday September 15.   There is an Alberta Education deadline for making applications to offer exams at our location.    Students wishing to rewrite a diploma exam will be required to pay $25.   Information on the rewrite protocols and policies can be found on the Alberta Education web page. 

 

Junior High Cross-Country Running 
Practices: Monday and Wednesday 3:45 pm – 4:30 pm. Tuesday and Thursday 8:15 am – 8:45 am  

Cross Country Meets: September 13, 19 and 25 Start Time: 4:30 

  

All junior high students are welcome to join. Please pick up forms in the PE office.  

 

Math Contests 

Hey Mathletes! If you are interested in participating in Math Contests this year, please come to Ms. Hewitt’s room (A316) on Wednesday, September 20 at lunch. If you are unable to make this meeting, please stop by another day for an information sheet. 

 

Scorekeeping for Volleyball/Basketball 
With high school volleyball and junior high basketball starting up, we are in need of junior high and high school student volunteers to score keep during home games for these sports. Those students who volunteer will also be paid for the hours they put in. Students interested need to speak with Mr. Richmond in the PE office to sign up. 

 

Student Advocacy Group 

New to the school? Want to have your say? Queen Elizabeth Student Advocacy is looking for new members, and we want your help!  

  

QESA is a student-run organization working to build school culture and student quality of life at QEHS. In the past, we’ve worked on projects such as creating a school newspaper and starting a mental health initiative. Now we want your ideas!   Regular meetings start on Tuesday, September 19.

Neurodiversity Alliance (NDA) 
This club is an opportunity for both neurodivergent (autistic, dyslexic, dyspraxia, ADHD, etc.) and neurotypical students to help improve our school's accommodation for a neurodiverse student body and celebrate our different brains. Meetings will be held on Thursdays at lunch in Room 232 starting September 14th, 2023. The NDA will also serve as a chance for neurodivergent students to find and meet each other. All are welcome! 

 

Garden Club 

This year the Garden Club will create more green spaces within the school; add some pretty things to the Courtyard in order to make it a lovely gathering space, and continue to fill the vegetable beds with produce that the Cafe can use in the prpearation of our meals.  We would love for you to join us on Wednesdays at lunch and/or Fridays after school in the Courtyard.  We will meet in Room 232 on rainy or smokey days and once winter settles upon us. 

 
Art Club
 

Mondays 3:30 pm-5 pm, starting September 11th.  Meet in the Art Room 239.  Both Junior High and High School students are welcome. 

 

 

Bike Racks in front of School 

Thank you to Youth en Route for donating the temporary bike racks in front of the school!  We want to remind students to ensure their bikes are locked up securely.
