Library Learning Commons
The Library Learning Commons will be closed Monday Jan 22 - Monday Jan 29 (inclusive) due to diploma exams. Therefore, this week would be a good time to renew, return or exchange library books including completed novel studies.
Science Fair
There will be a Science Fair meeting on Monday, January 22 in room A303 at lunchtime.

Language Course Challenge Semester 2 Opportunity - Are you fluent (read, write, speak, and listen) in one of the languages listed below and want to earn up to 15 credits? This opportunity may be for you!!

Students who are fluent in one of the languages listed can register to complete a 2-part portfolio and exam writing assessment to determine if you can earn 30 level language credits. Part 1 will take place on Saturday, February 24 at either Western High School or St. Mary's High School depending on the language. Upon completion and recommendation of part 1, students will be provided recommendation feedback if it is in best interest to complete part 2. Part 2 will take place on Saturday, March 16. Prior to attending Part 1, there is a checklist of items that you will need to complete.
Please note, post-secondary schools may not accept a course challenge course as 1 of the courses that you use for admissions. Students will need to connect directly with preferred post-secondary institution to see if they will accept a language challenge for admission purposes. Students may only challenge a language one time (Part 2), so it is important to follow the recommendation of part 1 assessor.
For students interested please come pick up the paperwork from Student Services. The deadline to apply is: Thursday, February 8 at 4 PM.
Unique Pathways Information Night
Students and families are invited to learn more about unique pathways offered through partnerships between local post-secondary schools and CBE. Students and families can speak directly to post-secondary representatives about the wide range of program options available to students throughout their high school experience. Here is a link to CBE's unique pathways site where you can view the types of programs offered to students. Please note that semester 2 applications for unique pathways are now closed.
This opportunity will be held at the Career and Technology Centre (2336-53 Ave SW) on Wednesday, February 7 from 6-8 PM. No registration is required.
Calaway Park
A representative from Calaway Park will be in the SGA on Wednesday, February 21 to promote summer employment opportunities. Please stop by and ask your questions.
Child and Youth Well-Being: A Webinar Series for Parents and Guardians
Teen brains are amazing, but working with brains under construction comes with challenges. How do you nurture and appreciate this time? Adolescence is known across cultures as a tough time for both teens and adults who support them. Adults and teens can work together to form a deeper understanding of what is happening in the brain, creating a deeper understanding of one another. Y Mind is a FREE 7-week mental wellness program for teenagers (13-18 years old) offered through YMCA Calgary. The program aims to support and provide resources for teenagers experiencing mild to moderate levels of stress and/or anxiety.
Individuals can learn more about this program on this website (https://www.ymcacalgary.org/y-...) or complete a Formstack request (https://ymcacalgary.formstack....) to sign up for our Information and Intake Sessions. Students 14 and older can self-register for the program without parental consent as well. Scholarships
Education Matters – Investing in The Future Award - Open to students registered in grade 12 who demonstrate financial need and are completing the requirements of a high school diploma. Applicants must have demonstrated academic progress in grade 12 and marks sufficient for entrance to a post-secondary area of study. Applicants are required to submit proof of financial need. Applicants are required to submit an original essay of approximately 500 words or a two-minute video describing “the impact on their lives and the impact they hope to have on the world should they receive this opportunity.” Students must be planning to attend a Canadian higher education institution. Grad Clothing
Please return your pre-order form to Ms. Ross by January 19, 2024 in person (Room A307) or via email at mkross@cbe.ab.ca. Forms are available in Room A307, the main office and via the D2L Shell. If enough pre-orders are received, you will be given information about when and how to pay for your items.
Personal Foods Cookbook
Personal Foods is selling cookbooks as a fundraiser for the first time this year! The cookbook includes 50 of our favourite recipes in categories such as Appetizers and Salads, Soups and Sauces, Baking and Sweets, Seasonal, International, and Canadian classics.
The cookbooks are $25 and all proceeds will go back into the Personal Foods program. If you are interested in purchasing a cookbook, please connect with Ms. Jalili in Room 204 or at sajalili@cbe.ab.ca
Leadership
Meetings are on pause for exams and end of semester organizing. We will resume on Wednesday, January 31, the first day of Semester 2.
January Events & Happenings
Glamorgan Bakery - Texas Donuts (1/$4 or 3/$10) and Cheese Buns (1/$3 or 3/$7) will be available for order on Jan 16-18 at lunch in the SGA. Delivery will take place on Monday, January 29 or 30 for those that are away.

Yearbook
Did you know that yearbooks are not included in student fees? Avoid disappointment by pre-ordering your student's yearbook today! Students must pre-order their yearbooks by February 23rd. Please head to PowerSchool to pay. Any questions can be directed to the Business Office.
Crochet and Embroidery Club
Are you a current cross stitcher, embroiderer, or crocheter? Are you interested in learning one of these crafts? If you said yes to either of these questions, then this club is for you! Starting Wednesdays in February, bring your current works in progress (or the desire to learn) to room 233! Basic materials will be provided, and stitches will be reviewed. Come hang out and create with Ms. Hynes! (Room 233)
Chess Club
Thank you to all chess players for attending our Fall meetings. There will be no further Chess Club meetings in December; we will resume our Wednesday meetings January 31 after exams to coincide with the Semester 2 start.
We have tournament dates planned for January 31 and February 7 for our Queen Elizabeth Chess Club members during our Wednesday meetings 3:35-4:35. Students will be competing in Beginner or Intermediate groups. We are looking for donations of small items to use as prizes (candy, bookmarks, card decks, fidget tools, small brain games, $5 gift cards, or any inexpensive item suitable for gr 7-12 competitors who love Chess). There is no ASL club for the rest of the semester. It will return sometime early in the second semester.
