Dates of Interest 

April 19 – Non-Instructional Day – No classes for students 

Grad 2024 

  • Grad Ceremony begins at 10:30am on May 21 at the Jubilee Auditorium  
  • The reception will be held May 21 at Winsport from 4pm until 8pm. The reception is a chance for grads and their friends and families to mix and mingle; there will be a DJ, small bites and nonalcoholic beverages served! Tickets for the reception are $65 per person, and will be available for purchase through PowerSchool after April 22 
  • The rehearsal for the graduation ceremony will take place Thursday, May 16, in the afternoon in the main gym. Grade 12’s will come down with their classes.  Students on spares will be asked to meet in the main gym after lunch. Students will be given information and instructions about this formal event, as well as receive their grad gowns and caps to bring to Tuesday’s ceremony 
  • Guest tickets to the ceremony will be available through Ticketmaster April 22, tickets are free and there is no limit to the number of guests per student 
  • In order to access guest tickets, all outstanding school fees must be paid by April 15 
  • Please note that if you pay your outstanding fees after April 15, there may be a 1-2wk delay before gaining access to Ticketmaster 
  • If your child is 18 years old and has not signed a ‘Consent to Release Information to Parents’ form, you will not be able to access their information in PowerSchool 
  • The Ticketmaster link will be sent out in Knights Notes on Wednesday Apr 17for viewing; however, tickets won’t be available for booking until Monday Apr 22. This link will also be posted to our Grad Info on the school website. 

Student Services 

U of C - On April 17 the recruiter from U of C will be at Queen Elizabeth in the SGA to answer all your questions. Please pop by during Knight’s Block. 

Chinook Learning Presentation: Wednesday, April 24th in the Learning Commons during Knight’s block (8:55-9:25am).  Students who need to complete their diploma or upgrade courses for post-secondary entrance are invited to come hear the application process and Fall 2024 programming.   

Summer School: Students interested in summer school please see the QR codes available in Student Services to complete the online request form.  Students are now only able to complete one course (either online or in person).  The form allows for two choices in case your first priority is not available.  Students who have been approved for a Dual Credit Summer Courseare not able to enroll in Summer School.  Deadline for for requests is Wednesday, May 1. Please use this link to see which courses are being offered and where.  https://www.chinooklearningservices.com/SummerSchool/2024-Summer-School-Grades-10-12/Summer-School-Classroom-Courses/Core-Option-Courses-Summer-School.html

Chinook Learning Services: Chinook Learning Services is offering EAL 3-credit summer courses in July 2024.  Each of our four Summer School locations will be offering a Learning Strategies course for LP 1 and LP 2 newcomers and an academic English course for students in LP 3 or 4.  The courses will run from July 2 – 25, Monday to Friday, 10:00 AM – 12:56 PM.

GATE Parent Association Session 
ACCOMODATION IN POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION 
Tuesday April 30, 2024, 6:30pm on Zoom 

  • This session is for students and families supporting a high school student who experiences a disability related barrier in the learning environment. GATE and non-GATE families are welcome to attend. 
     
    Dr. Ana Pardo, from Academic Accommodation - Bridge the Gap, will be addressing the transition from high school to post-secondary for learners with disability-related barriers. Dr. Pardo has previously worked as the Director of Access and Inclusion Services at Mount Royal University and the Director of Accessibility Services at the University of Calgary. 
     
    Session topics will include: 
  • Differences between high school and post-secondary institutions regarding accessing and using academic accommodations 
  • Transition challenges for grade twelve students 
  • Resources to help students navigate the academic accommodation process at the post-secondary level 

A short GATE Parent Association General Meeting will follow the presentation. If you have a student registered in the GATE program for this current school year, you are a member of the GPA. If you want to attend the meeting but not the education session, please still register so that you receive the meeting link.

Science Fair 

Thank you to all students who participated in the QEHS Science Fair in March; students, staff and judges were all impressed by the depth of knowledge and ingenuity demonstrated by our students.  The Calgary Youth Science Fair is Friday, April 12 and QEHS has 15 projects that were selected from our school fair to compete at the city-wide competition.  Best of luck to all of our Calgary Youth Science Fair participants!   

Leadership Events  

April 22 is Earth Day- acknowledge the day by using minimal electricity and turning off your lights between 8:30-9:30pm 

 April 25 High School Spring Fling Dance 6-8pm 

    6-6:30- Live band!!      6:30-8- DJ! 

Tickets are on sale at lunch in the SGA April 22-24 => $5/1 or $7/2 

OR $7 at the door.  Enter at the back parking lot door, bring student ID 

Volunteers needed for ticket sales, decorations, set-up and take-down.  Volunteers will receive a free ticket to the dance.  Please see Mrs. Wilson-Brown if you are interested 

 April 30- Jr. High Touch Football interest meeting. 

All Jr. High students interested in playing Co-Ed Football (non-tackle) are asked to come to room A213 (Mrs. Wilson-Brown) at lunch for more information.  Practices will be twice a week after school in May, tournament is on Friday June 7. 

Paper Airplane Contest 

Make a paper airplane and compete in Engineering Club’s paper airplane contest taking place at lunch on Thursday, April 11 in the Senior Gym.  There will be three competition categories: Range, Airtime, and Stunts.   Rules: https://forms.gle/rq1njBDs5CbT81Js6 

Little Free Seed Library 

With the help of our Construction students, QEHS Gardening Club will be making a Little Free Seed Library.  The Seed Library will be accessible to everyone in the community and is intended to provide people with the opportunity to take seeds to plant in their gardens or to donate seeds for neighbors to use.  We have a stock of seeds we’re starting with but would appreciate donations of (1) labeled garden seeds and (2) tiny jars or containers to store the seeds in, no more than about 2 inches high.  Please bring any donations for the seed library to the Main Office; we will be collecting donations throughout April.

Chess Club – Year End Tournament 

Year End Tournament May 8 & 15   Students will be competing in Beginner or Intermediate groups. Prizes will be offered for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in both groups. We are looking for donations of small items to use as prizes (candy, bookmarks, card decks, fidget tools, small brain games, $5 gift cards, or any inexpensive item suitable for gr 7-12 competitors.
